Foster with us
Foster a Podenco.
Bring joy to a Podenco and give them a loving stop gap until they find their forever home.
As we move to a new way of working with our Spanish network, the kennels can fill up quickly in rescue and some pods are just not able to cope with life in a centre, no matter how loving and well cared for they are.
Our foster program is more important than ever so we can continue rescuing, but also focus on the rehabilitation for those that need.

Because some Podencos just don’t get noticed…
As you may know, we have some long-stayers here at Hope For Podencos, pods that often for no reason at all seem to get overlooked and don’t get their chance to shine.
We are looking for some special people, with patience, kindness and love. We need people willing to spend their time and energy to help a long-stayer show that they too are ready to be part of a family. Sometimes all they need is that stepping stone towards a forever family and suddenly they are seen again.
-
Because some just need a little more…
Each Podenco will need a different amount of time depending on their circumstances and that’s what fostering is all about. No rush for adoption, just moving at the pods own pace, introducing them to routine, roads, cars, trains, cats, kids, noise, and being on their own sometimes. Having a resident dog helps a lot too as the pod can learn so much from them and follow their lead. We can have dogs that are struggling in kennels and just not showing the best version of themselves which often changes as soon as they hit a home environment.
We rely on fosters to not only help these dogs learn the ropes of home life, but also assess them for what we’ll then look for as a perfect match for their forever home.

Because you can feel the love too!
It’s not just the Podencos that benefit form fostering, having a number of fosterers around the UK will allow potential adopters to visit and get to know the pod and vice-versa. As a fosterer you will get so much joy out of helping and watching a Podenco come out of their shell, learn about the world, grow in confidence and become a happy and healthy pod!
Hope For Podencos will support you, continuing to be responsible for any vet fees should the Podenco need medical assistance or vaccine updates and will be there, along with our UK based Foster Co-ordinators to help with anything else along the way! Being part of our foster network truly is part of the HFP Family.
“We embarked on our first successful foster - a podenco named Dana. She went to her forever home and whilst I can't say it wasn't tough to see her leave, it has been a thoroughly rewarding experience. 8 weeks of getting to know each other, lots of fun, growth, love and 1 day of a mixed bag of emotions as she left, followed by updates and happiness knowing she is settling into life with her wonderful adopters.”

“I’ve had several fosters and i can say it is one of the most rewarding things I have done. Not all fosters are the same and each have their own personalities and needs. To be able to nurture, care and bring these dogs into a loving home environment feels like it is a big achievement. With time and care it’s lovely to watch the dogs blossom, learn how to play, enjoy walks and home comforts. It’s always sad to see them go to move on to their forever home but seeing them continue to flourish in their new life brings so much joy. It’s an honour to be a footnote in their story and each one has a special place In my heart.”

“Fostering is one of the best things I have ever done, helping the longer stayers or ones struggling in kennels. I love watching them settle into home life and come out of their shell. As hard as it has been to let each one go, it has been just as amazing to watch them continue to grow in their forever homes.”

“Fostering is one of the most rewarding things in the world. To take these dogs into our home and welcome them as part of the family, shower them with all the love & care they’ve always needed, and ultimately see them finally in their forever home at the end of it is a beautiful, heart-warming journey. Emotionally it is hard to give them up, but to know that you’ve been their stepping stone to their Happily Ever After means they always have a place in your heart, and you theirs.”
